Police are investigating after a man shot and killed a child's dog Thursday evening.

The incident happened around 5:15 p.m. near Bell Road and Cotton Lane.

Surprise police said 56-year-old Matthew Tardy said he killed the dog after it attacked his own dog.

Police spokesman Norman Owens said a 6-year-old boy was walking the dog when it reportedly attacked Tardy's dog. Owens said police are not sure if the animal was leashed when it attacked the other dog.

Tardy told police when he saw the other dog climb on top of his dog, fearing for his dog's life, he pulled out a handgun and shot the dog.

The deceased dog was a pitbull that weighed about 55 pounds. Tardy's dog, which was reportedly on a leash at the time of the incident, was an Akita, weighing approximately 30 lbs.

Police said no criminal charges have been filed at this time.
