SURPRISE, AZ - A Surprise man has been arrested and faces charges of animal cruelty over the improper care of eight dogs.
According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, the 32-year-old man was arrested at his home and the female dog and seven puppies were seized.
Detectives took the eight animals after it was determined they had been neglected and were in dire need of food and water, along with medical attention, according to MCSO.
Officials say the dogs were underweight and dehydrated and veterinarians told investigators the animals would have died if neighbors and MCSO had not intervened.
The dogs were medically cleared by veterinarians and taken to the sheriff’s department facility for abused and neglected animals where they will be cared for by sheriff’s inmates.
MCSO says detectives began an investigation a couple of months ago after receiving a tip of neglect through the department’s animal cruelty hotline.
Detectives tried to work with the owner of the animals but after a couple of months the issue was not addressed and the dogs were seized.
ABC15 is not identifying the suspect as he has not yet been formally charged.
