Drivers in Surprise are about halfway through the big Bell Road closure at Grand Avenue, as ADOT works on a new interchange.

Since April, work has moved quickly to build a new bridge that will eventually carry Bell Road traffic over Grand Avenue. But watch out for a road closure this weekend.

Grand Avenue will close at 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, until 5 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, as crews pour concrete on the bridge deck. This will be the future pavement for the Bell Road bridge, and for safety reasons they have to stop traffic from passing underneath.

Safety is a big consideration, after a partial collapse during construction a few months ago.

Drivers should expect this same traffic alert the next two Friday nights, as ADOT spokesman Doug Nintzel says the crews are working to keep the project on track.

“There is still a lot of work to accomplish but we're on a good pace in terms of accomplishing this goal, getting traffic switched onto the Bell Road overpass in time for the holiday shopping season,” says Nintzel.

The entire project is set to wrap up next spring.
