22-year-old suspect arrested, 2 injured in Surprise shooting at apartment complex

SURPRISE, AZ - Two people were injured and one person is in custody in connection to an early morning shooting at an apartment complex in Surprise.

Shots were fired after a fight broke out in the parking lot of an apartment complex near West Bell Road and N Reems Road, said Sergeant Bert Anzini, spokesman for the Surprise Police Department.

One victim had gunshot wounds to his hand and abdomen and was flown to a nearby hospital, Anzini said. He is expected to recover from his injuries.

Another victim had been shot in his hand and sought medical care before talking with authorities, officials said.

22-year-old Rudy David Armendariz of El Mirage was arrested and booked into the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office 4th Avenue Jail on two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and four counts of Misconduct Involving Weapons, Anzini said.

Police said Armendariz was hiding in the apartment where a party was being held earlier. Police later located the pistol used by the suspect. Armendariz admitted to firing the weapon at the two victims, Anzini said.
