SURPRISE, AZ - Two people were sent to the hospital Wednesday morning after a wrong-way driver struck and unleashed a bee hive on a Surprise roadway.
Police said a woman was driving on the wrong side of the road in a neighborhood near Loop 303 and Bell Road when she went over a median to correct herself and struck a sprinkler control box, disrupting a hive inside.
A second woman walking near the crash scene was stung multiple times, according to officials at the scene.
Because the woman who was stung is allergic to bees, she was transported to nearby Banner Del Webb Medical Center to be treated.
Police said the female driver was also taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries she suffered in the crash.
Surprise resident Mike Neaves and another neighbor heard the accident outside and tried to help the driver. But a swarm of bees got to him first.
"We ran out there and the bees were swarming all over and I got stung several times," said Neaves.
Emergency responders at the scene "were not stung badly", according to police.
