PD: Suspect caught after fleeing authorities near Sun Lakes retirement community

SUN LAKES, AZ - Authorities have caught a man accused of ramming his truck into a police vehicle nearly hitting the officer, and then using his vehicle to break into a Sun Lakes retirement community Monday morning.

According to officers with Arizona's Department of Public Safety the incident started on Interstate 10 around 2 a.m. Monday.

A DPS officer pulled over a white Dodge Dakota truck for speeding near exit 162. When the officer approached the car, the suspect put the truck into reverse and hit the officer's car so quickly the officer says he had to jump out of the way into a ditch to avoid being hit.

Officers were able to locate the suspect's truck, which crashed into the entrance gate of the Oakwood Country Club near Dobson Road and Sun Lakes Boulevard.

The suspect fled police on foot into the nearby golf course.

Authorities found a handgun in the suspect's vehicle, as well as food supplies in the back. Authorities said they believe the suspect may be involved in human smuggling due to food and a watch that was found.

Details as to where the suspect was located were not immediately available.
