A woman is displaced from her home after an overnight garage fire in Peoria.

The fire happened at a home near 83rd Avenue and Cholla Street shortly after 2 a.m. on Monday.

Peoria Fire says the homeowner woke up to the smoke detector alarm sounding and was able to exit the home safely. The fire official says the working smoke detector likely saved the woman’s life.

She was not able to get her dog out of the home; however, firefighters were able to rescue the dog.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the garage area but there was a lot of smoke damage throughout the house.

According to information on scene, officials are investigating the cause of the fire. A neighbor reportedly smelled a gas odor before the blaze, but it's not clear if that's connected to the investigation.
