Peoria smoke shop owner, Mike Ghazawneh, busted for selling spice

PEORIA, AZ - A Peoria business owner was arrested for illegally selling Spice.

Mike Ghazawneh, 35, and owner of the "Tobacco Island Smoke Shop" located near 83rd Avenue and Cactus Road is facing drug possession and distribution charges after illegally selling spice, according to Amanda Jacinto, spokeswoman for the Peoria Police Department.

Authorities served two search warrants on April 29 -- one to Ghazawneh's business and one to his home -- after receiving information that he was illegally selling spice, a synthetic drug that mimicked the effects of marijuana.

Jacinto said nothing was found at his business, but 280 vials of the drug were found at his home. She also said the smoke shop owner admitted to authorities that he was illegally selling the drug.

Ghazawneh was warned a year ago, according to police, that selling spice was against the law after the Arizona Legislature passed HB 2327, which added synthetic drugs to Arizona's Dangerous Drug statutes.

He now faces several drug charges.
