PD: 'Fake fight' leads to man's death at Peoria bar, Matthew Pape arrested

PEORIA, AZ - A Peoria man has been arrested on a murder charge after his friend died from injuries suffered in a "fake" bar fight.

Peoria police spokeswoman Amanda Jacinto said officers were called to Enoch's Sports Lounge near 67th and Peoria avenues around midnight where they were told two men who were close friends had been play fighting when at one point one of the men put the other in a hold that caused him to pass out.

As the victim fell to the ground he hit his head, causing an injury that later proved to be fatal, Jacinto said.

The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Surprise resident David Witmer.

The suspect, 39-year-old Matthew Pape, was arrested and booked into jail for second-degree murder.
