PEORIA, AZ - Three people are hospitalized in critical condition after being injured during a fire in a Peoria town house.
Fire officials say the three people shut themselves in a bathroom and used wet towels to try to keep smoke from entering during the fire late Sunday night.
They called 911 and told the dispatcher where they'd taken refuge, but they weren't responsive when firefighters got them out of their home near 107th Avenue and Northern.
"They literally saved their own lives," said Deputy Fire Chief Rick Picard. "They were able to tell us what unit they were in and where they were which helped crews get a path to them."
The victims are described as a young man and two young women.
The fire caved in the townhouse's roof, and another town house also was badly damaged. Six other units had smoke or fire damage.
"All I have are the clothes on my back," he said. "I figure if everything goes well, I can cry tomorrow."
Red Cross is assisting families.
Picard said the fire appears to have been started on the patio which blocked their access.
