PEORIA, AZ - Authorities say a man was fatally wounded by sheriff's deputies Sunday night in the West Valley.
Maricopa County Sheriff's Officer Christopher Hegstrom said deputies responded to a domestic assault call around 8 p.m. near 113th Avenue and Happy Valley Parkway after a woman called to say her husband was trying to choke her.
She reportedly told 911 dispatchers that her husband had been drinking and there were weapons in the home.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they heard a gunshot and began negotiating from a distance with a male suspect who was displaying a weapon and making threats.
Maricopa County Sheriff's SWAT deputies responded and continued negotiations.
Hegstrom said that just after 10 p.m. negotiations broke down and the male suspect came out in the open and began firing rounds with an assault weapon.
Sheriff's deputies fired back, shooting and killing the suspect. No deputies were injured.
His name has not been released by authorities.
