PEORIA, AZ - Authorities have recovered the body of a scuba diver missing in Lake Pleasant since Thursday afternoon .
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Chris Hegstrom said the body of Nathan Allan Sheffel was found approximately 248 feet below the surface.
The body of the 63-year-old Phoenix resident was found using two remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROV) near the Old Waddell Dam.
According to Hegstrom, deputies responded to a call of a missing diver around 3:30 p.m. Thursday where three divers told them a fourth diver was last seen rapidly descending to depths below 170 feet of water.
The three divers said they searched on their own for a while before stopping for safety reasons.
Hegstrom said rescue divers were not put into the water due to the depth (approximately 230 feet) where Sheffel was last seen.
Searches were conducted with the ROVs equipped with sonar and cameras.
Divers lowered a basket to retrieve Sheffel and then dove in at 85 feet to help bring him up.
Hegstrom said at this point it is unknown if the diver went missing due to equipment failure or a medical issue. Authorities say Sheffel's body was not entangled in anything when located.
