LITCHFIELD PARK, AZ - Authorities say a door was propped open to a pool where a 2-year-old girl drowned Sunday.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is investigating the drowning that happened near Dysart and Bethany Home roads in Litchfield Park around 1:15 p.m.
MCSO says the little girl was part of a gathering of several parents and children and her parents lost track of her for between two and five minutes.
The homeowner found the toddler floating in the pool and immediately started performing CPR until paramedics arrived.
"It's unfortunate, but once again this was a family gathering," MCSO deputy Joaquin Enriquez said. "It's important we watch our kids around water, especially at an age where they are vulnerable and willing to go outside and explore."
Lincoln Gentle lives a couple of houses down from where it happened. He can't help but think of his own young children when he heard about the accident.
"It's the reason why I bought a house without a pool. I'm scared you can't keep your eyes on kids. Sometimes they climb over the fence, you don't see them. It's a pity it happened but you have to have your eyes open," Gentle said.
Investigators are trying to determine if there were floaties in the pool or on the little girl when she was found.
