Man decapitated in Saturday morning motorcycle accident

LAVEEN, AZ - A man was decapitated Saturday morning in a motorcycle accident near 47th and Southern avenues.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, the motorcyclist was killed after he struck a large crucifix outside a church between 4 a.m. and 5:45 a.m.

The motorcyclist was identified Saturday afternoon as 23-year-old Hernan Herrera.

MCSO says Herrera was traveling westbound on Southern Avenue when the motorcycle began a high speed wobble and crossed the center line.

The motorcycle collided with the wooden cross and the victim was thrown from the bike.

The motorcycle came to rest in a wire fence a few hundred feet from where Herrera went down.

MCSO says at this time speed is believed to be a factor in the accident.
