TUCSON, AZ - A stranger in Goodyear gave a Tucson family the best gift this holiday season.
The Contreras family recently went to the Pima Animal Care Center in Tucson after seeing Bella, a 2-year-old pit bull on a Craigslist ad.
The family had wanted to get a pet for their 8-year-old son Nathan, who has cystic fibrosis and rarely leaves home.
After seeing Bella, they decided to take her home. But they had to act fast.
"She was scheduled to be put down the very next day," said Nathan's mom, Lesli Contreras.
According to KGUN , the family heard about Bella's medical issues and they couldn't afford to give Bella the care she needed.
"We thought there is no way we could take that on," said Lesli.
"And right that very second, somebody called and said they would pay for Bella's meds and things," said Nathan Contreras.
A stranger in Goodyear, who didn't know Bella and didn't know this family, stepped up and helped the Contreras family.
That same stranger then reached out to a network of people to raise donations for food and veterinary care.
"Bella has been a lifesaver," said Lesli. "Because he really needs friendship...and I know it's blessed our family and I feel like we're more of a complete family."
Nathan and his family travel To Phoenix Children's Hospital regularly for his treatments.
