GOODYEAR, AZ - A Goodyear mother is being charged with attempted murder after she told a 911 dispatcher that she had drowned her child.
Phoeteama Neal, 28, called 911 Monday.
Through sobs, she told a dispatcher that her 20-month-old daughter was "dead" and Neal was holding her daughter "in [her] arms."
"I just drowned my baby," Neal told a dispatcher.
At last check, the baby was in critical condition, according to a police spokesperson.
Neal is an active duty member of the Air Force; she's based at Luke Air Force Base.
"We're aware that Goodyear authorities have taken one of our Airmen into custody," said Major Matt Hasson, a public affairs officer at the air base.
"This is a tragic situation and our thoughts and prayers are with the child and family."
Neal's status with the Air Force has not changed, Hasson said, noting that the investigation had just begun.
The Arizona Department of Child Safety and Goodyear Police continue to investigate the incident.
