GOODYEAR, AZ - Arizona Department of Corrections officials said four Perryville Prison inmates were taken to the hospital after they became sick from a strong gas smelling odor Wednesday night.
DOC spokesman Bill Lamoreaux said the gas was shut off and three buildings were evacuated while the Goodyear Fire Department assessed the situation.
Fire and Southwest Gas crews were unable to find any readings of natural gas or any other toxic fumes in the area.
Lamoreaux said the inmates were awake and alert when they were transported for evaluation.
Authorities said they are still trying to determine what caused the odor.
