Tow truck strikes power pole in Glendale, starts fire

GLENDALE, AZ - Several homes are without power near 61st Avenue and Bethany Home Road in Glendale after a tow truck struck a power pole sparking a fire on Friday morning.

The tow truck attempted to tow a vehicle in the residential neighborhood, striking a power pole causing the power lines to snap, police said.

The pole, transformer and surrounding grass caught on fire after the impact, police said.  The fire was extinguished by the Glendale Fire Department with no injuries reported.

Salt River Project cut power to the lines and eight homes were evacuated, police said.

Officials expect the power to be out for several hours.
