Officer Tracey Breeden of Glendale police said Mark Leroy Woodruff was found shortly before 7 a.m. in the front seat of his vehicle at his home near Maryland and 45th Avenues.
The victim's vehicle was still running, according to Breeden. It appeared that the victim suffered a gunshot wound.
Breeden said detectives have opened a homicide investigation.
The victim's family lives out of state, however, Woodruff has worked as a night custodian at Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Phoenix since 1995, according to police.
Robert Woods worked with Woodruff for the last two years and the two became friends.
Woods says they had a long talk just a month ago.
"That's what makes it so weird, all of a sudden you find out your friend's dead," said Woods.
Woods describes his friend as a great cartoonist who could draw anything, he was a jokester at work and wanted to make a difference in people’s lives.
"He enjoyed helping people, whatever he could do, he would do,” Woods said.
