Glendale fatal accident: Peoria high school student killed after being struck by vehicle in Glendale

GLENDALE, AZ - A 17-year-old Peoria High School student was killed Tuesday morning after he was struck by a vehicle in Glendale.

Glendale police responded to reports of a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle around 7 a.m. near 61st Avenue and Cactus Road in Glendale, said Sgt. Brent Coombs of Glendale police.

The Peoria Unified School District confirmed that 17-year-old Jeremy Skramstad was killed in the accident and attended Peoria High School.

"On behalf of the entire Peoria Unified School District, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family," the district said in a statement.

Police tried to perform live-saving efforts on the victim, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene, said Coombs.

The district has brought in counselors and will have them available throughout the week, according to the district.

There has also been a vigil planned for tonight at 7 p.m. at Desert Valley Park located at Sweetwater and 61st Avenue.

Police believe Skramstad tried to run across Cactus road, from south to north, on the eastside of the intersection. He attempted to cross when the light was red, which resulted in a female driver traveling westbound to strike him, according to police.

There is no evidence of any wrongdoing on the driver's part, said police.
