About 150 apartment units at a Glendale complex were without water most of Wednesday after a car crash damaged a water main.
According to information at the scene near 67th and Glendale avenues, a van driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a sign at the Glendale Manor residences around 1:30 a.m.
"If it had been a car or a kid or a person if they would have hit one on these apartments, it could have been a lot worse," said resident Jim Edwards.
During the crash, the vehicle also took out a 6-inch water line, sending water shooting into the air. Crews were forced to shut off the water while repairs were started. Affected apartments were also without air conditioning because water is needed for the chiller system.
Glendale firefighters filled buckets for residents from a water truck and had cases of water available. City water departments workers also assisted the plumbers with equipment and expertise.
"It's a team effort, and I really appreciate everything they've done," apartment manager Donna Close said.
Plumbing crews estimated water service would be restored by 10 p.m.
The driver of the crashed vehicle was cited.
