EL MIRAGE, AZ - Authorities say a 28-year-old man was airlifted to the hospital after being shot by El Mirage police Thursday night.
Police spokeswoman Annita Boynton said the incident started when officers responded to a suicide call around 6:10 p.m. near Thunderbird and Grand roads.
Boynton said when officers arrived on scene, a man came out of a home with a gun.
According to Boynton, feeling threatened, one officer and one sergeant fired at the suspect.
Authorities said the suspect was taken to John C. Lincoln North Hospital where he is currently in serious, but stable condition.
Boynton said it is unclear at this time if the suspect pointed the shotgun at the officer and sergeant, or charged at them.
Officials said the investigation is being turned over to the Department of Public Safety to ensure an impartial investigation.
Boynton said no officers were injured during the incident.
The names of the officers and suspect are not being released at this time.
