BUCKEYE, AZ - A Buckeye mother was arrested over the weekend after police found her 5-year-old son seriously injured.
Sharon Begay, 36, was arrested Friday night after her teenage daughter called police to their home, according to court documents.
Police found a 5-year-old boy in the home that had multiple face and head injuries, as well as bruising around his neck.
The boy told responding fire crews, “I thought she was trying to choke me to death,” referencing Begay.
Police were told by the victim that he had also been pushed down the stairs and punched before being strangled.
Siblings at the home who witnessed the incident stated that the boy had been assaulted by the mother, but the mother denies injuring her son.
Begay told authorities that the 5-year-old had scratches on his body from rough-housing with another brother.
According to court documents, Begay lives at the home with five or six children.
She is facing charges including aggravated assault and child abuse. She was also found to have multiple prior felonies.
