MCSO: Cory Candler waited hours before calling 911 after killing father-in-law

BUCKEYE, AZ - A 41-year-old man is in jail after he allegedly shot and killed in father-in-law Tuesday night.

Cory Candler is being held on one count of second-degree murder for the killing of 69-year-old Mark Wells at his home in Buckeye.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, dispatch received a 911 call from Candler who claimed to have shot and killed Wells hours before calling the sheriff’s office.

Candler said he had a verbal argument with Wells before the shooting and that the two had physically fought over the gun, which ultimately killed Wells.

When deputies arrived at the home they took Candler into custody and found Wells’ naked body on the couch. Wells reportedly had a close range gunshot wound to his head and blood smears covering his body.

During an interview with sheriff’s detectives, Candler admitted shooting and killing Wells and said he’d called family members in Missouri who urged him to call 911 when he said he wanted to run from deputies.

Candler told deputies that he attempted CPR on Wells, but MCSO says Wells’ body was found in a posed position on the couch not consistent with lifesaving procedures.

Detectives also found that Candler had washed his hands and face before deputies arrived, MCSO said.

Candler is jailed on a $500,000 bond.
