DPS: Semi truck fire shuts down westbound Interstate 10

Westbound Interstate 10 has been reopened after a semi truck loaded with cardboard caught fire.

A Department of Public Safety spokesperson said the fire happened near Wintersburg in the far West Valley Tuesday evening.

Authorities said the driver of the semi truck was not injured in the blaze.

Joel Hangar witnessed the fire. He told ABC15:

"I saw it when I was heading home, I actually thought my residence was on fire! Got back and the fire had already engulfed the front half of the cab so I grabbed my camera and started heading out. It burned for about 20-30 minutes before fire crews arrived. I didn't see any other vehicles involved. My parents who saw it from the start said it looked like the truck overheated and caught fire. It started from the front of the truck. By the time fire crews arrived it had engulfed the whole cab and was starting to engulf the trailer."

The westbound lanes were temporarily shut down while crews work to put the fire out. Eastbound lanes were not affected.

Video from Air15 showed traffic backed up for miles along I-10 as crews worked to clear the area.
