Veteran suffering serious injuries after Avondale hit and run crash

AVONDALE, AZ - Maricopa County Deputies are searching for the driver of a car that hit and severely injured a Valley man and then fled from the scene.

Mac Pieper nearly lost his life after the June 27th crash. He was on his way home from work near Dysart and Rose in Avondale when he was struck.

"How could you just leave someone for dead," he said from his hospital room at St. Joseph's Hospital where he is undergoing surgeries and rehab.

Pieper suffered severe head and internal injuries and several broken bones.

Pieper served three tours in Iraq. He returned from his latest deployment in November.

"We spent all these years worrying about whether he would come home," said his father Steve. "You never expect something like this to happen."

Deputies are looking for the driver of a green Camero that left the scene.

The family is offering a reward. Anyone with information should contact the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
