Heroes honored after near-drowning in Avondale

AVONDALE, AZ - A grandmother and granddaughter went for a walk that ended tragically. But, it's what their neighbors did next that had the city of Avondale honoring them as heroes.

On March 30, 2013 around 12:30 p.m., a 3-year-old child fell into one of the lakes at Crystal Gardens. Both the child and her grandmother, who tried to save her, would have drowned, had it not been for the actions of civic-minded residents and Avondale public safety personnel who arrived at the scene.

From the 911-caller, to the neighbor who jumped into the water and others who helped pull the victims out, to the police officer and the off-duty nurse who performed life saving techniques, the actions of several individuals that day contributed to a happy outcome.

The grandmother didn't know how to swim, but jumped into the water anyway.

She said when a loved one is in danger, you don't think about risking your own life.
