Grandmother's condition improves after weekend near-drowning in Avondale

AVONDALE, AZ - A 59-year-old grandmother is expected to make a full recovery after she was found face down, along with her granddaughter , in a community lake in Avondale on Saturday.

Avondale police say Manju Chopra had taken her 3-year-old granddaughter, Hamanssha, for a walk and somehow the child fell into the lake near 107th Avenue and McDowell Road.

Manju went into the water after her and police say she told family members she couldn't get her footing and kept going under water.

By the time neighbors arrived, both were floating face down in the water.

Hamanssha was taken to Phoenix Children's Hospital in stable condition and was admitted for observation as a precaution.

Manju was taken to Banner Estrella Hospital in critical condition but police say her condition has improved and she is expected to make a full recovery, according to police.
