AVONDALE, AZ - A woman and her granddaughter are in Valley hospitals after being pulled from a community lake in Avondale Saturday afternoon.
Avondale residents say the woman was with her 3-year-old granddaughter when the girl somehow fell into the retention basin near McDowell Road and 107th Avenue.
The 59-year-old woman went in after the girl and by the time neighbors got to them to pull them out, both were face down in the water.
A nearby police officer worked on both victims until paramedics arrived.
The child was reportedly awake and alert before she was transported to Phoenix Children's Hospital.
However, paramedics were performing CPR on her grandmother as she was transported to a Valley hospital.
Police say they believe the lake is anywhere from 2 to 6 feet deep in areas.
The neighbor who pulled the grandmother and girl from the water told ABC15 he was waist deep when he rescued them.
At last check Avondale police said the 3-year-old is doing well, however the grandmother is in critical condition.
