AVONDALE, AZ - An Avondale man was arrested after he allegedly sexually assaulted, threatened and beat his wife, saying he was allowed to do so under Islamic law after she had an affair, according to court documents.
The man and woman were arguing in their garage near 112th Avenue and Palm Lane about her allegedly having an affair, which escalated into the man taking her to their car against her will. The man drove to a nearby Walgreen’s, where the woman attempted to flee, court documents say.
Inside the car, the man started to punch the woman in her face, neck, back, chest and legs. He also strangled her and tried to cut off her breathing, according to court documents.
The man threatened to kill the woman, saying he had the right to because of his “Islamic belief,” and he said he was going to throw her in a lake because she couldn’t swim, court documents say.
The couple then allegedly returned to their home, where the man took her to their bedroom, advising her to be quiet so she wouldn’t wake up their three children.
In the bedroom, he allegedly told her to get on the floor and pray, where he then sexually assaulted her, court documents say.
The man fell asleep after the sexual assault, and the woman escaped to a neighbor’s house to call police, according to court documents.
During an exam, authorities found extensive injuries on the woman’s neck and shoulders like she had been strangled, as well as bruising and tears consistent with forced sexual penetration, according to court documents.
The man was booked into the Avondale city jail on charges of aggravated assault, unlawful imprisonment, threats and intimidation, sexual assault and assault with intent to injure. He was then transferred to Maricopa County jail.
