TEMPE, AZ - Longtime television journalist and news anchor Tom Brokaw will deliver the commencement speech at Arizona State University's May 3 undergraduate commencement ceremony.
Statepress.com reported the announcement came in news release from the university Thursday morning.
Director of University Ceremonies Melissa Werner said it is rare to have a commencement speaker besides the president of the university.
Brokaw will be the first high-profile commencement speaker at ASU since President Barack Obama's commencement address on May 13, 2009, according to Downtown Devil .
Brokaw will also receive an honorary degree from ASU.
Brokaw has won numerous awards over his six-decade career. In 2006 he was honored with the journalism school's annual Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism.
The commencement is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on May 3 in Sun Devil Stadium. The university expects more than 10,000 students to receive degrees during the ceremony, according to Downtown Devil.
