TEMPE, AZ - A woman is accused of child abuse after going grocery shopping in Tempe and allegedly leaving her infant son inside a hot car for nearly 41 minutes.
Tempe police spokeswoman Molly Enright says 39-year-old Maria-Theresa Pio was booked into jail after the Saturday incident.
Authorities say an off-duty Tempe first responder discovered the 1-year-old child crying and sweating profusely inside the Cadillac Escalade SUV that wasn't running at about 3 p.m. Saturday.
Firefighters, fire medics and police responded, removing the infant from the vehicle quickly.
The boy was transported to a Tempe hospital, treated by medical personnel and released to his father.
Authorities said the boy is expected to make a full recovery.
“She was in there. She went to Starbucks. She got a coffee. She was reading a magazine while she was in line and it didn't appear she was in any hurry to get back to the vehicle. They immediately asked if she had a baby and she ran to the front door where are officers were,” says Lt. Mike Pooley with the Tempe Police Department.
Police say the interior temperature of the vehicle using a digital infrared thermometer was measured at 124 degrees and the infant car seat was 113 degrees.
