TEMPE, AZ - A pet emu died after it escaped from its home and was chased around a Tempe neighborhood on Wednesday.
Tempe police and workers from the Phoenix Zoo tried to corral the bird as it ran wild in the area of McKellips Road and College Avenue.
Tempe police spokesman Mike Pooley said the bird does not belong to the zoo and that the private owner has had "Ichabod" for 35 years.
The emu was tackled by zoo personnel but apparently succumbed to the heat.
Pooley said the owner has a female emu named "Matilda."
