TEMPE, AZ - Authorities are continuing to investigate what led to a shooting in the parking lot outside of Arizona Mills mall Saturday that injured one person.
Police arrested 20-year-old Voyee Smith for unlawful discharge of a firearm within city limits, endangerment and duty on striking an unattended vehicle, said Sgt. Michael Pooley, spokesman for the Tempe Police Department.
Pooley said that Smith, his girlfriend and another female friend were near the entrance to the Sea Life Aquarium outside the mall when an altercation occurred with another group of unknown individuals.
Smith and another person each pulled out a firearm and began firing at each other, said Pooley. One of the females was hit in the arm, he said.
The shooting occurred around 5:50 p.m. Saturday evening.
Smith then fled the area continuing to fire rounds randomly at the other subjects and hit a vehicle, witnesses reportedly told police. Authorities located Smith at his girlfriend's residence along with his firearm, said police.
Authorities have not been able to locate the other suspects in the shooting and "very little" information has been given to authorities, said Pooley.
Police said the area where the shooting happened was crowded with several people entering and exiting the mall.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to contact the Tempe Police Department at 480-350-8311.
