Embattled Guadalupe Mayor Rebecca Jimenez storms out of town council meeting with recall looming

GUADALUPE, AZ - Chaos erupted at the Thursday night Guadalupe Town Council meeting, one day after a recall petition against Mayor Rebecca Jimenez was verified as legitimate.

"You're a damn liar!" Jimenez shouted at Vice Mayor Andrew Sanchez as Sanchez was making comments at the end of the meeting.

That comment came after Sanchez said Jimenez' father said something disparaging after a previous meeting, which Jimenez and her father denied.

Sanchez initiated a recall campaign against the embattled mayor, who took a plea deal last month to avoid felony charges including welfare fraud. She pleaded to a misdemeanor; the state alleged she improperly acquired food stamps. Sanchez collected more than enough signatures to trigger a recall election.

Jimenez has resisted calls to resign. Three people asked Jimenez during the public comment period to step down; she replied by saying, "Thank you."

Jimenez' lawyer was her sole advocate during the public comment period of the meeting.

Her attorney told the crowd that she still has integrity, and reminded the public that the misdemeanor charge she pleaded guilty to was possession of a forgery device.
