Woman shot after pointing gun at officers in Tempe

TEMPE, AZ - Tempe police say they shot a 31-year-old woman when she pulled out a gun and pointed it at them.

Officers said the situation started around 8:30 p.m. at 44th Street and Thomas Road in Phoenix. Officers in an unmarked car were following a woman with a warrant for a probation violation.

Police said when she tried to get away, officers chased her to an apartment complex at 16th Street and University in Tempe, where many ASU students live.

Phoenix officers attempted to contact the suspect in the parking lot while she was still in her vehicle.

Authorities said she pulled out a handgun and began pointing it at officers.

Upon seeing the firearm, officers began moving back and fired several rounds at her, striking her.

Officers said the woman was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
