Police: Animal control officer arrested for suspicion of DUI

TEMPE, AZ - An Avondale animal control officer has been arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence, Tempe police said.

Tempe police Sgt. Mike Pooley said Officer Matthew Hoffman was arrested around Tuesday afternoon near Broadway Road and Price Freeway.

Tempe police responded to the area around 12:45 p.m. after receiving several 911 calls reporting an Avondale police vehicle driving erratically in the parking lot before hitting a curb and fire hydrant.

Sgt. Mathew Hintz, spokesman for the Avondale Police Department, said Hoffman was in full uniform and was driving a City of Avondale police SUV at the time of the arrest.

Hoffman showed signs of impairment and was taken into custoy for DUI, Pooley said.

According to Hintz, Hoffman was in the area on a business-related matter. He has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
