People complained to South Carolina's licensing agency about Todd Kohlhepp's threats, grim statements and obscene Facebook posts years before authorities found a woman chained on his property and charged him in seven killings, redacted documents show.
The documents provided Friday to The Associated Press show an unidentified person wrote in 2009 "something MUST be done to stop this crazy man before something dreadful happens." The complaint said Kohlhepp identified himself on Facebook as a real estate agent while posting about sex, revenge and guns.
Another 2009 complaint said Kohlhepp threatened to destroy someone.
The licensing agency said in a statement those complaints weren't investigated because no alleged violations of real estate law were made. A third complaint in 2014 was investigated and dismissed.
The Anderson Independent-Mail first reported the complaints.
According to Tempe Police Sgt. Josie Montenegro, investigators are now going back through unsolved homicides dating back to Kohlhepp's original Arizona arrest to see if there is any connection.
Tempe police say they are reviewing old cases from 1986, just prior to when they arrested Kohlhepp for kidnapping and sexual assault. They are also looking at a brief period in 2001, after he was released from prison and before he moved back to South Carolina.
Tempe police say Kohlhepp mentioned he may have killed someone in Arizona, but they have not received any additional details from South Carolina officials. Police say this is just a case review, not an active investigation.
