TEMPE, AZ - Authorities are looking for a suspect who allegedly broke into a Tempe apartment and sexually abused a woman as she was sleeping.
Tempe police Sgt. Michael Pooley said the incident happened around 4:30 a.m. Thursday in an apartment near Mill Avenue and 5th Street.
Pooley said the victim was sleeping in her bedroom when she was awakened by an unknown suspect touching her genital area.
The woman confronted the suspect and chased him out of the apartment.
Pooley said the victim does not know the suspect and it is unknown how he got into the apartment. The victim's roommate was also home but did not see the suspect.
Neighbors who live nearby said they're taking extra steps for safety.
Max Mosley said he was surprised to hear about the crime so close to his home.
"You don't really hear about that kind of thing happening around here," said Mosley.
Another neighbor, Shea McNichol, said she and her roommate have a few ways to keep safe.
McNichol said they always tell each other where they will be and "We both have pepper spray on our key chains."
Police said while many enjoy a cool breeze at night, it is especially important to close windows and lock all doors including on the patio.
Mosley said, "A lot of people think you can't get in up there but it is climbable."
The suspect is described as a white male, 6 feet tall, with a heavy build and short brown hair. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, black pants and was wearing eyeglasses.
