TEMPE, AZ - A man is in custody for allegedly taking a small Tempe city bus for a joyride before it crashed into a wall.
The bus was reported stolen while it was left running at the city transit center about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Tempe police say no passengers were on the Orbit bus when it was stolen.
After the bus crashed into a wall at another location in the downtown area, police said 26-year-old James Martin tried to flee the area on foot at which time he jumped into the backyard of a home where the resident was outside with his large dogs. The dogs began to bark at Martin causing him to remain still until officers were able to place him into custody.
Police say the 26-year-old is being held on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and criminal trespass.
It was unclear Tuesday evening if Martin has a lawyer yet.
Police say Orbit buses provide service between Tempe residential neighborhoods and local destinations such as shopping centers.
