PD: One dead, one hurt after gunfire erupts at Tempe party

TEMPE, AZ - Authorities said one person was killed, and another injured, early Sunday after gunfire broke out at a party in Tempe.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. at the Questa Vida apartment complex near the Loop 101 and University Drive in Tempe, said Sgt. Michael Pooley of the Tempe Police Department.

Police said several people were attending a Christmas party when the suspect began shooting multiple rounds into the patio area with a handgun. Twenty-eight-year-old Jeff Ward was killed said Pooley.

A female victim was also shot, but police said her injuries appear to be non-life-threatening.

Tempe police arrested 18-year-old Daniel Taylor on charges of first degree murder and aggravated assault. Authorities believe he acted alone in the shooting.

SWAT officers in tactical gear were working for hours to bring Taylor, who was believed to be on property after the shooting, into custody.

The scene was cleared of any threat by 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Detectives were still processing the scene.

The shooting remains under investigation.
