Officials approve steel dam for Tempe Town Lake

TEMPE, AZ - Tempe Town Lake is in for some changes following a Thursday night City Council vote.

Council members have unanimously approved a $24 million steel dam at the west end, replacing a temporary structure built after the original dam burst three years ago.

The need for a permanent dam became evident in July 2010 when one of the rubber bladders ruptured, sending lake water flowing down the Salt River bed.

The new dam will reportedly be built in Phoenix starting in January.

It is set to be completed by the end of 2015.
