Monsoon storms heartbreaking for Valley veteran

TEMPE, AZ - Residents in Tempe are cleaning up after Sunday night’s storm.

Lupe Espindola woke up to find wind and rain had destroyed his carport, laundry room and shed.

“I’ll just have to rebuild.”

The military veteran said he could hear the storm roll in and knew there would be some damage, but had no idea the extent.

“I couldn’t even open the door of this gate. I don’t know how badly the car is damaged,” said Lupe.

But it's not the damage to the carport or laundry room that pulled on his heart.

It's what was inside his shed.

"It's just things. Things that bring back memories," said Lupe.

Memories of his son, who at 41, died of a heart attack.

In Lupe's shed were mementos from his son's childhood stored away for more than 30 years.

While he hopes the items can be recovered, Lupe is thankful no one got hurt.
