Mom, daugher escape Tempe apartment fire

TEMPE, AZ - A mother and daughter are safe after their Tempe apartment caught fire early Thursday.

Tempe Asst. Fire Chief John Valenzuela said the fire sparked around 3:40 a.m. at the complex near Broadway Road and Dorsey Lane.

The fire started in a second floor apartment and spread to the roof.

Valenzuela said a neighbor saw the fire while on the way to work and knocked on the door to wake the woman and the teenager and called 911.

Another 20 to 30 people were evacuated from nearby apartments until crews got the fire under control.

Valenzuela said firefighters were able to put out the fire fairly quickly. Besides fire damage to the original apartment, several other apartments suffered smoke damage.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
