Driver receives life-threatening injuries after Tempe light rail crash

TEMPE, AZ - A man who was critically injured after colliding with a light rail train in Tempe Thursday morning is now in stable condition.

According to Michael Pooley with the Tempe Police Department, the 65-year-old was making an illegal U-turn at Apache Boulevard and Price Road when he and a passenger were hit by the train around 11:35 a.m.

The driver received life-threatening injuries and had to be extricated from his car after the crash.

Tempe police said the passenger received non-life threatening injuries from the wreck.

No passengers on the light rail train were hurt.

The scene was cleared by 1 p.m.
