Man accused of Tempe mall armed robbery convicted

A man accused of robbing a store at a Tempe mall and threatening a police officer at gunpoint has been convicted in the case.

Maricopa County prosecutors said Tuesday that a jury found 21-year-old Roger Nelson guilty of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault on a peace officer.

He's scheduled to be sentenced March 21.

Tempe police say Nelson fled the scene of an accident and ran into the Arizona Mills Mall armed with a handgun on Aug. 29, 2011.

Witnesses say Nelson stole two pairs of shoes from a store and pointed the gun at an employee.

When police arrived, Nelson reportedly drew his gun and pointed it at an officer's chest.

The officer was able to take away the weapon and used a stun gun to incapacitate Nelson.
