James Martin, who stole Tempe city bus, says he 'just wanted to get out of Arizona'

The man arrested and charged with stealing a Tempe city bus says he wanted to get out of Arizona.

“I wanted to get back to my roots, I wanted to go to Oklahoma,” said James Martin.

“The bus driver stepped out to take a smoke, and I was like 'let’s go,'" said Martin.

Tempe police say they tried to stop Martin, but he refused to pull over and eventually crashed into a fence and then a back wall of a house.

Martin says one hour before taking the bus, he took some meth.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to take the bus or crash into a fence,” said Martin.

Court records show Martin was just released from jail for similar charges a week before.

His records also reveal a criminal history that includes car theft and drug charges.
