TEMPE, AZ - Police pepper sprayed several students at a high school basketball game in Tempe on Thursday night after tensions between the two long time rivals got heated.
Police responded to Corona del Sol High School in Tempe Thursday night, after the game with Marcos de Niza. Police say there were 400 kids standing out in a lot getting ready to fight.
Police tell ABC15 the kids refused to disperse, and then someone threw a water bottle. When the crowd seemingly started to get more aggressive, an officer pepper sprayed several kids. A school security guard also got hit by the spray. Those people were treated at the scene and no one was seriously injured.
The rivalry between the schools has been on-going for years.
"It was getting a bit heated inside," said Corona student Sean Tracey. "It has always been between our schools."
"It has been going on for a long time," said parent Lisa Lake. "It might be getting a little out of hand."
"It is getting a little ugly but it is fun too," said Corona student Jeremy Ramsland.
