FD: Pedestrian hit by light rail in Tempe

TEMPE, AZ - Fire crews rescued a pedestrian who was trapped underneath a light rail Tuesday morning in Tempe.

Dozens of fire and police crews were called to the Smith-Martin light rail station on Apache Boulevard, just east of McClintock Drive, around 11 a.m. after reports of a crash.

Air15 video showed the 40-year-old woman stuck underneath the light rail after getting hit.

Tempe fire spokesman Jim Schmit said crews had to remove the bumper of the train to get her out.

The woman was transported to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center.

Schmit said she suffered head and arm injuries. A Tempe police spokeswoman said the injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

Police said street traffic is back to normal on both east and westbound Apache Boulevard.

Light rail traffic was running normally in both directions by 12:30 p.m.
