TEMPE, AZ - Firefighters battled not just an intense apartment fire Tuesday morning, but also severe heat.
The Hayden Lane Apartments sparked on fire around 9 a.m.
At least three units were destroyed and several others were damaged.
Firefighters were met with thick smoke and intense flames when they arrived.
Engineer Alex Myers says if the tenants hadn't gotten out before they arrived -- they fire would likely have turned deadly.
Myers also says heat made the fight very difficult.
Firefighters were rotated it every twenty minutes to bring their body temperature down. Paramedics then checked their vitals before they were allowed to go back into the blaze.
Additional crews from Scottsdale, Mesa and Tempe were brought in so firefighters could be rotated out.
Myers says early indications show the the fire started in the middle unit, however investigators are on scene to find the exact origin and cause.
Fire officials say one woman was taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
